To save money on beauty products I spend on powder and foundations -the base of my face,-but I do not spend high amounts on eye liners,lip liners, eyeshadows, lip sticks, and blush and bronzers -I only use this sometimes.

A good powder and foundation should last you most of the day, usually in the evening I give myself a touch up. It is better to spend more money on a foundation and powder than on a lipstick or eye liner. You can save money if you are a savvy beauty spender. Think about what you really need most? Are your lips more important than dressing up your eyes? Do you like to wear eye liner? How often do you wear it?
Consider all of this before you shop and spend money.

Comp card printing tips

Do not put more than 4 photos on the back of your compcard. It starts to look to cluttered and not professional. Your front photo should be a nice beauty shot, smile shot or close up.

It is always BEST to order compcards in person and to go to the printing place and order with a person who can look at your image/ CD, photos on their computer and talk about your options, but if you are ordering on the internet here are some printing places to consider.

Chosing a compcard printing company comes down to price and quality. This compcard, also known as a zed card, is going to represent you to agents and clients, so be picky about the quality of the card stock and the coloring.

When ordering over the web ALWAYS see a proof in person before you approve the card.
Ask for a proof in the mail, not just an email. Colors can change from the way a photo looks on the web and how it looks in person.

You don't need to put your email or phone number on the card and it is best NOT to. You don't want to misplace your cards and then have some random person calling or emailing you. Also you want to be able to freelance with agencies and submit your cards out and try to get representation, -usually agencies will give you stickers to put on the cards when you go to castings. Or you can write the agency number on the card when you are sent to a casting. I make all my own marketing material. Being a serious model tips-how to get a modeling agency

Are you stuck in a rut? Not sure how to get a modeling agent? Well, it is no easy feat for a short girl but it is possible, but ask yourself, are you really trying and in the right ways? Many girls like to call themselves models, but being a model doesn't really happen until you are working with a brand for a product ad, commercial, or catalog, and getting a paycheck with that brand. To really model you need to work with real agencies, legit ones, and ones that have a good reputation. If you are short it is possible to get a modeling agency but you have to market yourself in most likely a more conversative style. A lot of shorter girls do not have the right photos to market themselves to agencies that will welcome them. The photos they have are TOO fashiony, or too sexy, so it is best to really start over your images and focus on getting a good headshot, the headshot alone can get you in teh door to an agency, but unlike fashion agencies, most commercial print agencies DO NOT have open calls, legit commercial modeling agencies do not have open calls and do not ask for money to join their agency board, basically you just mail your photos in the mail to the agencies and you will get a call if your look is liked.

Think about the agency you are submitting to. Stop by their website. What do their girls look like on the website, what do their photos look like? What kind of expressions and style are their poses? Pay attention these things because obviously the agency like these types of models. So focus on your photos and mailings, the more you submit the higher your chances. If you are stuck in a rut, ask yourself: What are you doing for you? Are you just sitting around waiting, have you done a few shoots and just submitted to a few agencies? Thats it? Get after it! You can't just expect things to happen in a few days, it takes time. And ALOT of WORK!

Model Style in the Colder Months-yes it is possible!

To look good and be fashionable in the winter you need to keep in mind a few things:

1. The power of the silk scarf, it not only looks trendy and fashionable but it can keep you warm, but scarfs in ALL colors, sizes, lengths, and thickness.

2. Blazers, -I hope you have a few, I love them. It might be a pain to wear a blazer under a coat, so it feels like you have two coats on right? Well, suck it up because blazers are a cute way to stay warm, and have a little slinky top on under to keep your skin feeling alive.

3. Fall and Winter coats in all colors, not just black, I saw a cute pink coat the other day, with cute ties and belts are key!

4. Jeans tucked in boots always looks good.

5. I love zipper and button sweaters and cardigans more than sweaters.

6. Get some cute tights, lacey, thick ones, I love brown, black and cream colors, also light pink is cute. I also love tights with designs on them, like flannel or a pattern.

7. I love sweater dresses, my favorite. I love them in all colors and textures.

8. Boots, ankle boots, to really high boots are a must but be picky and look carefully when shopping, think of a boot that can go from running errends to drinks or dinner? I love gray boots best right now!

9. Gloves, dress up your out fit with some cute gloves, I like vintage ones from vintage stores, I usually save those for special night or days out, otherwise I wear the cheap ones, like a dollar!

10. Hats. I love peddler hats and caps, I love hats that look like riding caps. Bomber hats are really cute too. Usually East Village or SoHo shopping for me.

Using your body to model- body modeling

There is nothing wrong with using your body to model, what is wrong though is when you use it in the wrong way that really doesn’t make you a model, but makes you just a tease/

If you have a great body, there is modeling work you can do that could be even nude, but it is the type of modeling job you could tell your mom about.

There are way too many girls just showing it for no reason. Think they are models because they can bend their ass and stick out their chest, when really that is not modeling at all.


Well, if what you are going for is just being a tease then this show and me are not for you, but if you are looking for new ways to use your body, and get ahead as a model these are some tips that might help you.

7. examples of castings being naked,……When I walk into a casting that involves being nude usually it will be a female casting director, or photographer, or there will at least be one female in the room. I have gone on castings for Vaseline, Braun Razor, Showtime, where I have stood naked.
8. It helps to know your body and how you look like you pose. Thinking quick can help you get the job if you can easily know how to pose your body for it to look long, lean and great.
9. how to prepare for shoot, etc. lotion, taking care of your body,
10. It really comes down to having Goals. Thinking of how to go about getting them done and now waiting for it all to be handed to you. Because that day might never come. Usually it doesn’t.

Models Working with Designers- how to do it and why you should

Models that are aspiring, trying to find an agent and get modeling work should try to work with designers, and aspiring designers. Throughout the start of my pursuits I did work with many aspiring designers the benefits were that:

Most designers want a quality photographer to shoot their goods and they want good models as well. This will be an opportunity to work with a good photographer and work with a brand and product.

You can get exposure. If you are in the shots that involve the products that are being marketed to magazines, and for press releases, then if the photos appear in the magazine then you will get that tear sheet in the magazine too! You will get that exposure too.

Usually the designers will give you good quality images which you can use as well for your modeling portfolio and compcard.

You will get practice working with brands, you will learn how to work with a product, how to hold it and make it apart of the shot and keep an equal balance between you and the product, modeling isn't just about YOU, it is about you working the product!

Usually accessory products are not as picky about height, you can model jewerly, hats, shoes, handbags, and get some modeling experience, better photos and you can share this experience with a commercial print modeling agency that you want to be with.

How to do it:

1. Go to fashion events, craft shows for jewerly, industry tradeshows, bring a photo of yourself -could just be a 4 x 6 photo with your contact number- if you don't have a compcard it is ok, just try to make it a nice photo, with a smile. You can hand them off at the events, shows, but most important GET THE BUSINESS CARDS of the company, it is better to send the photo through email, and DON'T send LINKS just attach the jpeg and your info and your interest in modeling for the brand.
2. Read the news, read WWD, read about new designers, and companies, read AD Age too, Read the news to notice the features and contact the brands about if they need a model. Elle magazine features a lot of up coming designers as well for accessories.
3. Google! use google as a research tool. Google jewerly designer + your city, handbag designer + your city, and so on, think innovatively, research and try to find designers than might need models, usually the aspiring designer is more likely to need models like yourself, you both can benefit eachother.

Don't be greedy, you might not get paid for your time at first, but you will get an experience that will help build your experience as a model, which can lead to bigger things.

When presenting yourself:
It is important to send and show photos of yourself that are clear, show personality, smiles, and your whole body.

Mention your best assets, "I have great eyes," I have great skin" etc.

To be a model, sometimes you have to open the door yourself, and start promoting you to the right companies that are ambitious like you are. Your portfolio will benefit, the agency will like it, and you will most likely get some good photos which you can use for a compcard too.

Finding a Photographer for Modeling Photos

Most REALLY good photographers won't shoot with a new model for free. Most photographers that are really talented and REAL photographers do not test either. So it can seem like a problem when it comes to approaching the photographer and you might wonder what to do, how to do it, and if you have a tight budget how you can get the photos you need that an agency wants to see.


First lets define what a REAL photographer is:
"real as in they are FULL TIME photographers, that is what they do to make a living."

Knowing this, doing a test shoot with you or shooting you for free won't really make them any money so when it comes to approaching a photographer I would use your personality, your own creative ideas and even try to network with some aspiring designers and pull some accessories, jewerly, shoes, hats, or help to find a cool location to shoot, a lounge, a park, be inventive. Don't just say, "I am a new model can we shoot." Give the GOOD photographer a reason to shoot you. You will get better photos and you will get an agent quicker if you focus on quality.

This is a pursuit, like a small business, and if you want to model, you have to think of it like setting up shop, you might need to invest in photos and printing as well.

It is work to be a model and it does involve research at the start, it isn't the 1970's or 80's when there were like three top agencies and it was just an obvious thing, you went to an open call and there were NO short models. Today the short girl has a chance because of advertising and the diverse amount of magazines out there that need content. Today it is different, advertising is different and models of all heights are needed to model products but you have to think about the photos you need in a carefully and planned way, not just winging it, because modeling is not just being called HOT on your Myspace page.

Now I am talking about approaching REAL photographers, not just these silly guys with cameras, so here are some tips for finding one:

call some agencies, print modeling agencies, the ones you want to be with, and ask if they can suggest a test photographer.
research some photo studios and photography when Google searching, -this is because the word photographer has become sometimes any old joe with a camera and a finger,- so research to find serious photographers.
Go to a photo lab, ask if the employees can suggest a good Photographer that tests, one that you could debate a rate with?
Of course finding a professional photographer is best, but also maybe someone who recently graduated college or someone who also might need some experience with a model. Someone who at least understands photography, lighting, and isn't just shooting and holding the camera for his ego.

There are photo equipment stores, like B&H or Calumet Photographic. Start researching in your hometown or city.

If all you are looking for is a headshot, and you are broke, then you need to think savvy, be confident, and be serious.

Photography is not a joke, especially if you work with the WRONG people.

Using social sites and so-called model and photographer social portfolio sites does not bring really fantastic photos most of the time. There are just guys with camera's there usually. So I would know a head of time what you need, which is a basic headshot, a full length body shot, could be in a dress or swimwear.

There are photography schools you could also approach, you could also call the agencies and ask if they can refer to any photographers than test or have a testing rate you can consider with your budget.

Photography Tips For Models

Looking at Photography Books, ads, editorials, looking at compcards, at headshots, looking and observing is the best learning tool for an aspiring model. The more we see the more we learn, also..to be a good model you have to know yourself, your body, how it moves, what it looks like from many angles, and if you don't know your body you should really stand in front of a mirror, clothed and naked and see how your body looks from all angles and when wearing certain clothing and nothing at all.

It is a good idea to know your body, know how to angle it to look longer, how to pose, how to work with a product. You will be a better model if you spend time looking to learn.

Don't believe everything you read or hear. Just because you're 65, you don't have to immediately sign up for a helmet hairstyle. A younger look and lighter color can take years off your face. Meanwhile, just because you're 21, you don't have to have long hair. Let's examine what you can do and what you can really get away with at age 20, 30, 40 and older.

Your 20s. This is the best time of your life to try out all types of haircuts and styles. Short hairstyles, done right, can make you look more mature (or like a kid) while long looks (like Angelina Jolie) can be pretty and romantic.

Tip #1: Consider your career goals. In your 20s you're looking to establish yourself in a career, so depending on what that career is, you might opt for a more professional look. Tip #2: Experiment with length and color. Now is the time to see how you look with super long hair, then cut it off and see if you take well to short hair. If you had blonde hair as a kid, you'll look great blonde now. Blessed with black hair? Try a lighter brown or red.

Your 30s. These are the years you might be starting a family or powering ahead in your career (or both). While you can get away with all sorts of styles at this age, you'll want to pick a style that fits your lifestyle. Single in the city? Go for long, sexy waves. At home with a toddler or two? Skip the all-one-length long hair and try for a medium-length cut that can go in a ponytail during the day but with rollers can look great while out with your husband.

Tip #1: Just because you're a mom doesn't mean you can't be sexy. If you want the long, sexy locks, go for it. Just make sure you have the time to keep up your style.

Tip #2: Don't be afraid to go short. We have to admit, many women keep their hair long because they know some day that they will have to go short. But they are missing out on some cute styles and you may be too. After all, you can always grow out your hair.

Tip #3: Gray hair popping up? Most women see a few strands of gray hair in the mid-to-late 30s. African-American women tend to get gray later in their 40s. Your 40s. Believe it or not, you don't have to go short in your 40s. In these years, your personality might drive your hairstyle. If you ooze sexuality, go for long, sexy waves. Funky and athletic? We recently heard about a woman in her mid-40s who has a haircut that totally fits her funky personality: It's short and a bit spiky. If you met her, you'd think she's no older than 35.

Your 50s. Shoulder-length hair is a great option for you. Medium-length hair is very versatile -- it can be worn up or down. You can "sex it up" with waves or go sleek with a straight-iron. You'll also find it's more flattering than long, flowing hair.

Tip #1: Try layers. Piecey layers around the face are very flattering. Or go one-length with underlayers. This will give hair body and looks great dried under.

Tip #2: Hair that is too styled can make you look dated. Even if hair is short, don't go for a spiky look; instead, ask for longer layers. Cut out pictures and bring them to the stylist with you.

Tip #3: A lighter color can take years off your face. Ask your stylist what color works best for your skin tone.

Your 60s and older. Short hairstyles, whether you opt for sweet or spiky, are a great bet for you. They frame your face, showing off and highlighting your best features. You'll be glad to know they are also low-maintenance.

Tip #1: Silver hair can be very sexy. However, not all women embrace their natural hair color. Many women become blondes as they get older, a natural move considering gray is a softer, lighter color than a natural brown. But blonde hair doesn't complement all skin tones. A better bet for naturally dark-haired women is to color your hair a dark base and get lighter highlights.

Tip #2: Skip the old-lady salons where they cut your hair short and give you curls tight to your scalp, spray it into a helmet and send you off on your way until next week. Go to your daughter's salon and ask for a new look. Better yet, take your daughter along and ask her advice.

Tip #3: You can have longer hair. Just don't let hair grow below your shoulders. Pull your hair back into a sophisticated chignon and show off your beautiful features.

Modeling Agency Advice

Impressing the modeling agency can involve some savvy research and effort. It isn't just about mailing photos to all the modeling agencies you can think of, it is about sending photos that actually sell you and intrigue them. The best way to start thinking about the photos you need are to look in magazines and editorials and to focus on these types of ads for inspiration:

Jewerly ads- usually the models face is clear, and natural, and her face is straight on or slightly angled. Shows her neck and eye features. Hair is normally not dramatic, swept up, or curled, or pushed away from the necklace to reveal the product. Could be smiling or not smiling.
The Shot is taken Only from the shoulders up and showing the hands and arms as well sometimes.

Skincare and makeup ads- usually the model is showing off the product for lips, eyes, and skin, the face is smiling, the shot is taken from the shoulders up.

Hair care ad- the shot is from the chest up, or shoulder up and the hair is the focus, but the eyes of the model speak and stand out as well. The clothing is simply to give the focus on the face.

Myspace Models and Modeling Advice

On Myself I get approached by my aspiring models, all asking advice and my tips on their photos and such. I do my best to answer them all. Here is a question from one girl recently:

"i just wanted to ask how did you become a model when you're "almost 5'4""because i'm 5'4" and everyone is telling me i can't be a model. but they say i have the body structure for it.and some people say face for it too.but i don't know.I know it's possible for you but what did you have to do? "

The type of modeling you should look into is called:commercial print. Lifestyle modeling. you photos just need to be natural and show personality and energy. Agencies to look at in NYC are:R&L models

PARTS Models
Flaunt models
cunningham escott...and many others

Starting to model involves having two things:
A headshot and a nice energy shot that shows your whole body.

I would look at the commercial print modeling agency websites in your hometown or city,- Google the words commercial print modeling agencies - there are print agencies out there- it all about finding them- and there is a difference sometimes at agencies between PRINT divisions and commercial print modeling agencies that work strickly with commercial print models. Models of all heights. For this type of modeling you need to use your personality.

Focus on getting a nice headshot. And then mailing the agencies your photos, the big thing that many girls forget and which you sholdn't forget is that MODELING is jot just fashion and not only playboy...modeling is for many lifestyle products from sunglasses, to tampons! even Lenscrafters. Models model for banks, skincare, hair care, jewerly, handbags, panty hose, shoes, you name it, And this type of modeling invovling products and it called commercial print modeling.

Just be yourself, show your personality, act like your selling a product in your photos, you can get far doing that alone. Agents want to see that you can WORK with products and they need samples and proof you can model, especially if you are short. So show this in your images.

I love sharing my daily tips on my blogs, videos and pod cast Model Talk, because to any girl who wants to be a model needs some honest advice and most of the girls who want to be models are under 5'5".

Wanting to be a model isn't anything new, long before the internet girls wanted to be seen, desired, and be a model, but today it is so loud and seen and it seems every girl has the title or wants to have the title somehow.

Wanting to be a model is not a problem, it is a problem though if you have low self esteem and you are wanting to be a model not really for a profession but for just your own ego that needs tendering.

On the other hand, it isn't just low self image that makes a girl obsessed to be a model, it is the industry standards that scream that a girl has to be 5'9" or taller to be one. The standards can lead even a girl who is attractive and has an interesting look to end up working with jerks, perverts, and assholes.

The standard of the modeling world in height can lead a shorter girl to use social internet sites, where they mingle and shoot with "guys with cameras" who make them feel like models, when really they are just trying to learn what real modeling is the wrong way.

A girl falls for a scam when she is sometimes really wants to be a model but just doesn’t know how to start and ends up doing things that actually could lose her dignity. But it IS possible to be a model no matter your height, it is possible for a short girl to get modeling work, so when these girls end up having low expectations it comes from not really understanding the possibilities out there...the truth really....the real industry is about advertising and for advertising models of all heights and colors, and kinds are needed. Really to be a model it is about knowing what you are good at and good for, and having confidence is a big part of that,- these days there are models of all kinds, hand models, shoe models, hair models, and the print world and commercial print modeling world is more welcome to girls of all heights, it is all about how you market yourself and how you present yourself to agents, modeling is not just fashion, modeling is for products and brands and magazines of all types and they need models of all types for it.

I think TV has been the biggest misconception of what it means to be a model. Reality TV has really screwed the word backwards!

Girls having low expectations for Modeling and Acting pursuits

Are you just wanting to be seen so bad that you find yourself making mistakes, working with the wrong people and rushing for that quick exposure without thinking " is this the right way to market myself?"

It is the same thing that happened in the entertainment business as a whole.

I think this happens to actresses as well as aspiring models. And I think many writers who write for TV write with low expectations of their audience, and viewers. Alot of what I see on TV is dumbing down society and the viewer. I can't stand watching TV these days. Terrible! I feel like the writers expect me to stay interested in a show that is full of attitude problems, and issues. I really just don't have time for that shit.

Maybe it's just me but wherever I turn someone is trying to be a model fast, be an actress fast, be a prize winning writer, start a new business fast, fast, fast. I shake my head.

Real success doesn't happen over night. Rushing it doesn't make your life, bank account or pursuits any better, and sometimes the rush means that you have low expectations for yourself, not high ones.

The ride to success comes with having higher expectations, and a realistic mindset.

Wanting to model, wanting to market

Marketing yourself as a model is the biggest importance right now in the modeling industry for a new model. It isn't just about walking into an open call and getting an agencies attention, it is about being prepared and being smart and not just being toyed with. Many girls who want to model are under 5'5" and they get the wrong mindset of what it means to be a model and how to be one by TV and what they might see even in magazines. Modeling for a girl that is short is possible but it doesn't involve walking the door and snap! like magic becoming a model. It takes some prep work ahead of time. Being a model today is possible for girls of all heights because there is a need for models of all types today, from all ethnicities to everything from hand modeling, shoe modeling, to beauty, and fit modeling, modeling is not just the runway, and not just one type of look anymore. I like looking at a girl with a unique flaw to her, imperfections that make her who she is. And give her that second glance look. Who cares if your teeth are not perfect, or your legs are not as long as you hoped, you can still model, but it comes down to how you market yourself.

If you are complaining about how to get a modeling agent, how you don't have one, how you don't have work as a model, maybe it comes down to how you are marketing yourself? Do your photos speak on what type of model you can be? I know it might sound backwards being you have to be in control of your pursuits, especially if you are petite model, or shorter model, you might have to approach agencies yourself, not be discovered at the beach, you will have to make your own compcard and mail it out to agencies, and submit yourself to the agencies you want to work with. You will have to start thinking of a modeling portfolio and the tools you need to become a model.

You are not a model until you are paid by a top brand, and have been in an ad campaign in my mind, and it takes more than just "calling" yourself a model in some slutty lingerie to be one. Unless the slutty lingerie is for a top brand!
