Hey Girls,

I notice how some petite fashion and petite advocating website's complain about the lifestyle of a petite. I just don't see it that way.

I love being petite, so I will have to work a little harder, know myself a little better, cheat the camera angle to get length some times, but I would not want to be an inch taller. That doesn't mean I am going to B*tch about it, it means to celebrate the goods that you've got! :) Shortie, shrimp, peanut, bring it, I'm lovin' it!

A girl on Facebook recently messaged me and asked about working as a model and included, "I live about 4 hours from Toronto so that's where I've been doing interviews but the distance kind of makes some agencies uneasy; Moving there would really be my best option though, so I'm just going to have to work hard save up and know that I will get there soon enough!"

My reply might help your own modeling pursuits:

I suggest while you plan to get to Toronto to get some experience beforehand, I think showing up with some tearsheets, and some professional experience already in your portfolio will be of benefit. Let's say you model for a local aspiring jewelry designer in your area, most towns and smaller cities these days have many aspiring designers and for accessories who says there is a height requirement to model a pair of earrings or a handbag? I would start to expand your network and try to reach out to some aspiring brands about modeling for them, because some experience can help encourage a modeling agency to work with you when you get to Toronto even if you are petite

The thing is, I think experience and "showing you can" leads to opportunities. If you want to model and you are shorter than fashion height = 5'8", 5'9" 5'10 without heels. Then you have to think about what you can realistically get a model job for? What type of projects and magazines can you realistically model for? Why would a client want to hire you? Why would a modeling agency want to work with you?

If you can answer these questions, the bigger answer is also there: How you can prepare for your own success and goals.

To pursue a certain area in modeling you need photos that prove you can work in that area. For a shorter girl it is commercial print modeling photos. And also despite being petite also consider editorial modeling for magazines -beauty editorials, fitness, anything non-high fashion, and modeling for catalogs, product packaging and accessory goods are good to pursue as well, and TV commercials and acting as well. Why do you have to be 5'10 to model a f'in scarf! Handbag? Or necklace?

Also consider: parts modeling. Using your hands, feet, stomach, face, body for modeling for product ads, commercials and campaigns.

Having some experience, modeling for a local or aspiring or growing brand can be a great credit to have in your portfolio.

Basically, since print modeling agencies do not craft your career, and work with their models non-exclusive, and do not typically invest in their models financially, you need to be prepared with professional photos already and a portfolio and professional comp cards. Because if you pitch agencies without your model marketing tools, and without any experience, without any photos and without a clue, you will prob not get an opportunity.

To work as a model when you are shorter it involves a heck of a lot of prep work, print modeling agencies like it when you are prepared, so you'll be working on your photos, printing comp cards, building your portfolio, buying a portfolio and a lot of self-investment happens, meaning: investing your money for marketing materials and time and energy.

Passion, ambition and research are so important to get opportunities and experience, modeling jobs and to get what you want. So remember the more prepared you are the better. Hard work is something I believe in. I think working hard is a good thing, not something to cringe about, the journey of striving to do something is about not giving up, it takes work, and journey is the best part.

The Journey is where all the networking and self-growth happens and where accomplishments are made, and like Jessica Kleiman and Meryl Weinsaft Cooper have mentioned in their book, and during our podcast segment, during that journey there is great importance in, "Being resourceful and flexible and having a plan B," while building your reputation, promoting your skills and making yourself indispensable. The book shares the three P's. Prepare, Project and Protect.

Prepare by developing your personal story.
Project your personality, image and key messages.
Protect the image you've created.

I always say in modeling to: Do your research and be prepared for what you are walking in to. A model is also a marketer.

So, you should know: What is that casting for? What have their previous campaigns looked like? What is the image of the brand/company, magazine, etc., so you can go prepared, and look the part and have a better chance of booking that job and getting that opportunity. To show you can do something and that you are good for the job, you often have to first prove you can, whether it be in the professional photos you've crafted or the words you choose, presentation matters, present yourself- first impressions matter, yes, in modeling too.

The better you are at selling yourself, skills and assets in all different situations the more of a chance that you will get that chance. And you know I talk non-stop talk about believing in yourself, and knowing yourself and assets. The same message can be said within an office job or any job really.

Also cmmunication skills are so important to not take for granted, and knowing how to communicate and being able to talk to anyone is an important asset when it comes to networking and build contacts and striving. I don't just mean talking through social media, although social media, facebook, twitter are self branding and communication tools, knowing how to spark up conversation is not something to dismay. It is important, yes even in this Internet and Digital-Age.

And Jessica Kleiman and Meryl Weinsaft Cooper mention in Be Your Own Best Publicist, and also on my podcast, that when you’re going to an event, meeting or corporate get together you can relax by, "Being prepared to talk about a news event," and to be prepared with topics to chat about ahead of time. I have started conversations by asking a person I didn't not know, "How do you know the host of the event, or so and so," or "Where did you hear of this event?" And when I was at a romance reading recently I asked someone I didn't know, "When did you start reading romance novels?"

Remember for modeling it's about if your look fits what the art director, editor or casting director is looking for, but everyone loves a person with some personality, someone who brings a smile. Even as a model, sometimes you have a few minutes or seconds to make a little extra impression to an editor, casting director or photographer during a casting. It's so important to have a good attitude and smiling is always a good idea. And if you can bring a compliment that is always nice. Sometimes I've complimented on the clients last campaign, or if it was a shoe modeling casting sometimes I have said sweetly, "This is such a cute shoe" "This is a great heel," or "great color!" etc. Showing interest in the brand, client, magazine, casting that you are attending, can make you memorable. When I am complimented on my own modeling comp card, I have taken a quick moment to share a little more detail of the images, "Oh that was for an Easy Spirit campaign," or "I loved that shoot, it was for___." Bring your professionalism and some personality.

I mention on this blog that models, especially shorter models, have to really work to build their network: know hair stylists, know stylists, know photographers, and even knowing editors at magazines can be of benefit. I got my first tearsheets myself, my first tearsheet actually came from a photographer thinking of me after we met, and he needed someone last minute, someone who was easy to work with and had pep/personality. Me! Another time, I worked with a photographer who pulled jewelry from a boutique store and had networked with local brands and stores, and after our shoot he pitched the editor of a local Miami magazine the editorial photo story and it got published. I've learned the importance of networking, bringing more to the job than just your face, etc., bringing your ability to be "a part of the project" can also be important. Once on the job shooting a shoe campaign, I suggested some ideas for the next shot when the art director was stumped.

During our chat Jessica Kleiman and Meryl Weinsaft Cooper mentioned how being resourceful and having a positive attitude, being a problem solver is a skill that is a big asset. They shared an experience when the Internet got turned off before a major press release had to go out, so instead of settling on saying, "Oh well, this sucks" or "I guess we can't do this now,"--they suggested to get resourceful--by packing up and heading to an Internet cafe and getting the press release out anyways. Make it happen, make it work, find a way, think fast, and be willing to be innovative and resourceful.

Models can also be resourceful too.

Photos are an aspiring models major marketing tool, so when working on your photos for your comp card and portfolio, the ability to pull a handbag from your friend's collect, use your friends coffee shop as a location, or know a hairstylist at a local hair salon who might want to be a part of your own photo shoot could lead to building relationships and even getting modeling jobs. Let's say you are a new aspiring model, without much experience and you want to approach a professional photographer who has a lot of experience and has shot for magazines and campaigns, or even a photographer for just a headshot,--if you can at least offer a location, a stylist, a makeup artist, an idea,- you might get a chance to work with them, by being more than just "another model" it shows your professionalism, even if you are new to the game.

Also as an aspiring model you should be networking with those who are also ambitious and aspiring, I met one of my best friends at an accessories trade show and ended up modeling for her aspiring handbag line, now her handbags have been seen in magazines and also on the show Gossip Girl, but I knew her when she was starting out and was one of her first models. Later, I helped her get some buzz for her brand and when an article ran on her, obviously I was the model in the photo that was used. It helped me build experience when I was starting out to work with a growing brand and I also gained a great friend.

When I asked Jessica Kleiman and Meryl Weinsaft Cooper about how a newbie at the interview process can prepare, and how to celebrate their strengths during the job interview and handle the question: Tell me about yourself?

The ladies suggested before the interview to: "Write down how they would describe themselves, write down a list adjectives, what makes you unique, what makes you different, what makes you, you?" and "Ask your mom, best friend, boyfriend and also someone you don't know quite well. And see how they line up," because "it's a good way to whittle down what your key assets are." And think about the job description and why you are good for the job.

Model news that caught my eye, the consumer wouldn't mind a humanistic model

Was it photoshop or a bigger issue?

I noticed this post at Styleite.com about the Revolve clothing weight debate. Revolve said the boney model won't be appearing in their ads anymore, "We are working closely with both the model and her agent to get her to a healthier size. She won’t be appearing in any of our new product batches or in any of our fashion editorial photos moving forward until the issue is adequately addressed." The model (now speculated as Allie Crandell, who you might have seen on MTV's "The City", was booked though, she was just doing her job, she did pose nicely despite leading the consumer concerned for the health of the model, and the company did hire her and her images are still on the site, --I wonder how many of the garments that she wore have been sold. Also I can't help but wonder if the Photoshop thing was at work to cause a media frenzy and get more hits to the site? Now Allie is being punished to not be in any of the new product batches is implying she will not be hired again. When really is she the one to punish? Let's say the model wasn't Allie and instead a newbie excited for one of her first modeling jobs, she was discovered or what not, and wanted to model, and was conforming to the weight that her agency wanted her to be at and obviously the brand asked for a girl of a certain size (measurement or weight), height, look, and the result makes obvious the ways the public views skinny models and that if they were curvier or more realistic and human looking that it wouldn't harm a brands image. The consumer wouldn't mind a humanistic model.

If the collar bone of a model is protruding intensely, it can be a sign of something being not right, ---but some girls are just skinny and have a hard time even gaining weight, even those not in the fashion industry. I have friends who are not models who actually have a hard time gaining weight, even when they try to eat more, better, work out, etc. Without knowing the model's background it is rude to also judge her and pick on her.

As consumers we should already be aware that the fashion industry is often about fantasy, not reality, the skinner the better is still obviously the drill, but maybe over time the images we see in high fashion will be more about humanistic.

When it comes to skinny models, the models (who are usually teenagers) should not be punished, put down, picked on, despite that they are working in that world, and THAT is also an issue. The skinny model is a person, is a girl who is also figuring our herself, going through a lot of changes as a person, as a girl, as a model.

I hope more modeling agencies consider the psychology comfort that a teen model needs (they are teens, young adults, with a lot of pressure around them and competition) and the support shouldn't be something that comes out of their paycheck, --getting some self esteem, comfort, and information about health and healthy living should be simply just a part of the fashion modeling agencies lifestyle. The client, who asks for a model of a certain type (weight, height), and the agency work together, the model makes the cut or not and the agency makes the money or not based on what the client is asking for and the agency has available. So if fashion models are going to become more humanistic looking in the future, the client and the agency are obviously going to have to experience taking a chance, taking a risk, and believing that a model being a bit bigger is better. An agency will have to not book girls who are super skinny because they simply do not work with models that are, the client is going to have to suggest to the agency to send over models that are not skin and bones but have some meat on them.

Let's not forget some online retailers do use more humanistic and every day girl realistic looking models, but still recently a friend of mine who is plus-size said she would have bought more clothing at a plus-size online retailers website if the models were not only a size 8 and that it is tough to tell how the clothing will look without seeing it on a figure that is actual to the consumer. I think brands should use all types of models and all sizes of models wearing all the styles of the clothing, yes it is more work for the brand and costly to hire more than one model but the consumer would most likely purchase more items.

Especially in areas of dresses, bra's, and jeans.

Depending on the brand and the view point of the consumer, a "humanistic" image is also different as well.

In print modeling weight and measurements are not such a big deal, and a model can model past her late teens and early twenties, if a model is concerned about the pressures of the fashion industry she should look towards print modeling with a commercial print agency.

I don't care how long you have been around or who you've helped succeed, I care if you are legit, and not a scam!

( I do not support modeling schools or classes to be a model, or believe in paying crazy fees to work with agencies. Agencies take 20% of your pay from a booking. These days for print modeling agencies do not invest in their models such as making their comp cards, getting their portfolio, etc, this is something a model needs to buy on her own, go to the art store and get a PRATT portfolio. Use a printing service for your comp card and headshot. Don't fall for scams. These days it is about you discovering yourself and this doesn't involve getting scammed.)

Keep in mind these days anyone "scouting models" is a scam. Scouts back in the day seeked tall models and these days it has become scam-ville for a person to say "You could model!" so beware!

To work with a modeling agency you do not have to pay to use their photo services, and you do not have to pay for a modeling school or lessons,******** however you should be prepared to create and make your own comp cards and I suggest doing this through a printing service such as compcard.com and a professional agency that wants to work with you will at the very least work with the card you give them, even if it is not perfect, until you can improve it. DO NOT pay thousands for comp cards and photos, beware, it's a rip off! Also keep in mind you don't need a whole freaking portfolio to start modeling, you just need the basics shots. headshot, smile shot, standing catalog like shot, and a shot showing you CAN model a product naturally, like a cell phone, a handbag, a close up beauty shot is nice, and these shots can be basic, good lighting, and a professional photographer who understands print modeling is BEST to work with. But YOU should know ahead what YOU need for print modeling. Do your homework!

I believe in investing in yourself for yourself, not for an agency, until the agency is booking you consistant work, I would freelance non-exclusive with the agency and understand that you are your own best manager. Eyes open and do your research on the agencies ahead. Goodluck!

I love Roberto Cavalli and the nature elements within his collections. On the 40th anniversary of his label, Roberto Cavalli reveals to Harper’s Bazaar insight on his love for fashion and where his inspiration comes from, I thought it might be something you'd find intriguing:

Quick Petite Model Pose Tip

When you're short watch your upper arms, even the thinnest arm can look less flattering if angled the wrong way sometimes. Remember the tiniest bit of space between your arm and torso can create length and a more proportioned photo.

Pose tip: stand facing the mirror, notice your arms while you are straight on to the mirror, it is the same perspective as being straight on to camera. Then turn your body slowly and watch what happens to your arms, now practice holding a product. Grab a cell phone, a handbag, or pretend to put on a lipstick like a product ad, watch your arms. Even though you are modeling a product a model has to be aware of her whole self.

start modeling as a short model

Daily girls ask me about "how to start modeling" and it is often followed with a "I feel like I am too short!"

Well, the best way to START anything is to learn as much as you can about it. Learn where you fit within the pursuit, become realistic about the pursuit and to craft your own career by taking a chance on yourself.

The more you research and know the better. The more you know about what you CAN do, where opportunity can be found the better. The more time you waste worrying about what you aren't --basically time is wasted.

The best thing to have to start modeling is a beautiful smiling headshot.
Among all other photos THIS ONE is the most important.

The reason: A shorter girl is more likely to work with a commercial print modeling agency. And for commercial print modeling a smile is better than any pout, or overly done makeup or styling or hair, the natural you is what sells in print modeling. Advertising is becoming more about hiring models that look real, and have a relatable look to the customer, consumer, reader, buyer.

The more you KNOW about the photos you need to approach a print modeling agency the better your chance. Getting an opportunity to work with an agency, (have an agency work with you), involves not just having your photo taken or making a comp card to send, but it involves creating marketable photos, so that your comp card is marketable. The agency receives your comp card in the mail and the agency says "this girl has something going on, she is real, she looks like a girl who could model anything, and has a lot of personality seen in her photos."

The comp card is your best marketing tool. Today I was asked on a Facebook message from an aspiring model: What is a comp card.

It is the best marketing tool for an aspiring model.

We live in this Internet-age, but the comp card is no excuse needed item by an aspiring model. You use it to get the agency, to get the job and to work as a model. No questions. You need it. Model pose tips: look longer, leaner,taller in photos

When you are in-front of the camera, there are a few easy tricks you can do to look longer, leaner, taller and more proportioned.

It starts with creating some space between your limbs.

Notice how in this photo there is space between the arm closest to the camera and my body. Space creates length. It makes me look taller and longer by naturally creating some space between my arms and torso. Also notice that my shoulders are at a slight angle which causes my front arm to also be at a slight side angle. It makes my upper arm appear leaner. Even a slight angle like this can make a girl of any size look longer and leaner and more proportioned in a photo. The leg closest to the camera is a bit forward, this creates length as well, it looks like there is movement involved, like the camera just caught me as I was coming down the stairs. Yes I am wearing a mini skirt, but notice how the focus of the shot is on my smile, and it looks like I am off to enjoy the sunny day. I probably was afterward! :)

This insight is for girls of all walks of life and a little space between the arms and body, even for this shot of me in Vegas, makes me appear longer and leaner even in a sweater.

I always make sure to create space between my arms and body. ALWAYS for group shots, I cropped myself here so you can see that:

P.s: When sitting sit at the edge of the seat, you could position your legs slightly asymmetrical to create length.

The"industry" part of "modeling industry" involves designers, brands, magazine editors and those that hire and book models for their marketing, editorial, promotion and advertising needs, and although there is not a million petite modeling agencies out there, there are commercial print modeling agencies that work with all sizes. It is all about having marketable photos, having your model marketing material & finding the right agencies. They are out there.

You are not hopeless if you are shorter. Instead of saying "I'm too short" why not focus on creating marketable photos that fit the commercial print world and try! It will NOT be easy, but it is possible if you do the work. :)

Research is a major asset of a model. :)

Recently on my Facebook wall the topic of fashion agencies came up.

Many fashion agencies do have commercial and lifestyle divisions however if you go to their websites, typically you will not find one girl under 5'8" --on the Elite website they are all tall, I mean 5'8" 5'10 tall, NY Models all tall girls too, Ford has print and parts division, but typically Ford models are 5'8 and kids division, they have a kids open call coming up: http://scouting.fordmodels.com/kids/ --and of course there are exceptions, and I always say aim high, but be realistically ambitious, if you are banking on fashion agencies signing you and you are 5'6", 5'5" ,5'4", 5'3", 5'2" then you should understand what commercial print modeling is and where you fit in the business of modeling and where you should put your energies to get opportunities...it is best to submit to print modeling agency your comp card or photos. Most girls who want to model these days are new to understanding the difference of fashion and commercial print and most are shorter than fashion height.

So for those that are new to modeling, there is nothing wrong with trying, submitting a snapshot, but you will notice open calls have height requirements and, sure of course, try, go for it, but also realistically I suggest striving to get experience with a print modeling agency, and Lauren Green is well respected print modeling agency in NYC but typically for models 25 and older, and there are many print modeling agencies out there, here is a list of some in NYC:

Really it comes down to researching in your town print modeling and talent agencies and casting directors and having your marketing material ready. A comp card and and portfolio, a headshot for commercial and TV work. Put it this way there are more print modeling agencies than fashion agencies. It's just up to you to find them and seek out the opportunities. There is a major amount of hands-on, self- investment and self-involvement to work as a model when you are not fashion height, and no matter your height modeling is tough!...However if a fashion agency's print division doesn't welcome you then remember there is a lot more out there, and there are many commercial print agencies out there and for a shorter girl THAT is where it is at.

Getting a print modeling agency to work with you is work. And I talk often about what it talks to create photos, make a comp card, and market your self to the right agencies.

I don't want girls to feel discouraged if fashion shuts the door in their face because fashion agencies do not typically work with shorter girls, under 5'7" unless you are a teen or child, but do be prepared for the hansd-on work that is involved with working with a commercial print modeling agency, talent agency and cast directors...it is a way more hands-on world than fashion.

Should you move to another city as a model? Answered

A shorter girl recently ask me about moving for her modeling, she wrote this: "I’m busy working on my portfolio here in South Africa, but would like to get an agent to represent me in NY, is this possible, if so which is the best Commercial/print modeling agency that you'd suggest? and would emailing them a few pics be good enough"

I replied with sharing insight on how having experience as a model before you move to a new city can be towards your benefit. Also I filled her in with the fact that there are MANY print modeling agencies and talent agencies out there, but print modeling agencies which work with models of all ages and sizes do not typically house their models and talent, and I stressed that modeling is not a stable pursuit in the sense that coming to a new city, or country can be a major risk and letdown if you do not have a backup plan. I love to hear from ambitious models, but having experience, even just a few magazine or editorial or catalog tear sheets is helpful, but most important you cannot up and move without doing your research, confiding in your parents or an adult. If you study for school in a different country or city it could be easier because you will most likely have housing or a dorming situation, but up and moving without a plan and without any experience is not a good idea.

I moved to Miami to model for 7 months, and did prepare ahead of time with mailing my comp cards to agencies but as a shorter girl it wasn't like Elite was welcoming me with a cold glass of water and in my memoir Almost 5'4" I go into the challenge and hardships of trying to survive on a dream and how much self promotion and research it involves to market yourself as a model in a new city.

I am not saying don't move to another city to model ever, but only make that journey if you have a backup plan and have done your research ahead of time on the town, on agencies, on casting directors, etc.

Hearing back from one agency doesn't mean you will be working ALL the time, in today’s age there are MANY girls who want to model which means print modeling agencies have many models to find work for within their roster. So, just know that the pursuit of a model is not always stable. Just a heads-up.

The media and fashion magazines flaunt fashion models, but many models work for lifestyle brands and model lifestyle products but they are not jetset and I just want to be clear about the lifestyle of a print model. Here are tips on the differences between a print and fashion model:

I think it is best to strive to get professional photos and then get some experience in your own area, even local experience modeling for a local brand or magazine, so that if you pursue other markets and cities you have some experience to use to market yourself with.

It is a growth and the "discovery fairy tale doesn't happen anymore often." The odds of someone in print modeling loving your photos and flying you to the US or another city are slim without experience or already having an established portfolio of work.

Especially if you are at the early stage of your modeling pursuits, it is a grab your bootstraps make it happen for yourself world. So grab your bootstraps and start preparing your headshot, comp card, and keep your goals and dreams but also strive to get some legit experience. Strive to get some opportunities locally to better market yourself to other goals, and to prove you are capable.

Also print modeling agencies in NYC and in most cities accept modeling submissions through postal mail and typically they suggest a model sends a modeling comp card. Emailing your photos might seem like the best, easiest way, but it is not, you will come off more professional, more put together if you make a printed comp card grab an envelope and stamps and mail by postal mail your comp card.

What causes change in size acceptance in modeling first? The Model, The Agent, The Editor or the Brand? There have been more diverse models in the past year in magazines and ads, but what causes size acceptance and change first in modeling? Model, author Isobella Jade shares how the agent, editor and the designer can inspire change in the modeling business and how "model size" and "sample size" and a "brands image" go hand in hand. How does size affect your modeling pursuits? She will also give tips on creating your comp card and marketing yourself to agencies no matter your height/size.

Marketing your self as a model: posing is not enough

Every day many girls ask me about the topic of photography in modeling. It is a major concern among aspiring models.

The photos you create make such a difference towards if you get representation or not from an agency. The more you focus on what the word model means the better. A model models something, and modeling means more than just posing. For a shorter girl, print modeling should be your focus.

Here are some hints to know if the photos you have are professional, agency quality and marketable, to show you can model:

1. Before taking the photo study ads for all types of lifestyle products, from cell phone ads, to hair products, to travel ads to ads for accessories.

2. Does the photo you created look like you are modeling for something? A product? Could it be an ad? Does it have an ad appeal? Ask yourself, does the photo just look like you are posing, or like you are really modeling something, it is such an important difference between just taking a photo and actually looking like a model. Does it look like you are "doing something" in the photo, in action, and enjoying it, happy, and showing your personality in a natural way?

3. Are you smiling? A big part of getting opportunities when you are not giraffe tall is using your personality within your photos, so make sure your photos show your personality.

4. Is the lighting good? If there is a shadow covering half your face this is not an acceptable marketable face, so make sure the photo is clear and the lighting is well done in the photo. An agent, casting director, etc, should not have to guess what you look like.

Remember modeling is not an easy pursuit, it is competitive and challengeing and tough. Modeling is a lot of work, involves a lot of hands-on work, and it involves really understanding your self, knowing your assets and how to translate what you DO HAVE and how to make those assets marketable towards modeling products for ads, commercials and editorials for magazines.

If you are a new model don't use the word amateur model

I find the words amateur model the wrong way to present your self if you are ambitious and serious about working as a model.

If you are a beginning model or new model, use the words "aspiring model" don't use the words amateur model, and just because you are new to modeling doesn't mean you should work with amateur photographers, don't.

Aim to work with those who understand the craft of photography. An amateur photographer is "playing around" with the word photographer, they might have the camera but do they know how to use it? Create a marketable shot? Create a shot a print modeling agency needs.

If the photographer doesn't understand what a print modeling agency needs or wants to see on a compcard, skip working with this person.

Unless that photographer has goals to work as a commercial photographer or make a business out of his photography craft, skip it, stay away from that type of photographer when it comes to your pursuits.

Know the photographer you are conducting a shoot with knows the craft of photography, knows lighting, and that the photographer understands the shots you need for your comp card and portfolio. A professional photographer, will not just shoot to shoot but will have a photography business and it is ok, and a good idea to invest in your self and goals with it comes to photography.

goodbye forever perfect teeth (beauty and teeth)

Over years I have learned how to work with my teeth. Control my teeth, and not let them control me. What I mean is I have imperfect teeth, well, that is it if you consider perfection when someone doesn't have a gap between their teeth and doesn't have an overbite. We all have imperfections. In High School teeth were something I observed in other girls. Many of the girls had braces already or maybe were just born with straight teeth. It felt like everyone had straight, together put teeth.

In my family, my mother and sister have a gap between their teeth. My grandmother did as well. In a sense the gap represents my roots. I have, overtime, learned to accept my gap, like it, even call it a trademark of my face. I think it gives me character.

Recently on my Youtube video page where I give tips about modeling, there was a comment that beauty models must have perfect teeth. I don't agree.

If your teeth are not bright as the full moon and perfectly straight you can still model and still be a beauty model. Beauty modeling involving modeling for cosmetics, skincare, and many lifestyle ads for products of all types from sunglasses, to jewelry, and hair care use all types of models. And many times the model's teeth are not even seen. Also many ads are using models with gaps now, and the perfect teeth thing is not a big thing anymore in modeling. If you got even teeth, that's great, if you don't, it's not a big thing. It won't hold you back, not if you are ambitious.

I have come to grips with my not perfectly straight teeth and gap and overbite. I have learned to work with it, and smile all the time with confidence, because even if your teeth are not perfect you can still express your energy, friendly attitude, upbeat persona and why you make a print model in your photos.

No matter how your teeth look, you should get a beauty shot done, a close up of your face as shot that has the essence of a beauty shot. Showing teeth or not.

If you are under 5'7" lifestyle magazines will become a good friend. To get inspired for the type of photos you need for print modeling it is best to observe ads and editorials that involve the face, the personality, smiles, and energy of the model. Not the pout, attitude, or high fashion latest trends, but instead focus on where models of all types, sizes and ages are used to model products. In the latest issue of Glamour magazine I noticed these ads that show the models personality and also an assortment of products, from coffee, Orajel, Tide, and beauty. Ads where it isn't about the models height. Observe these ads, and use images like this as a guide for the type of photos you should include on your comp card as an aspiring model, especially if you are petite. Isobella Jade: Allison, you have an amazing collection of jeans and you use petite models to model your jeans because they are meant for a petite fit, what do you look for when casting a model? Also can you give us some behind the scenes of the photo-shoot?

Allison Izu: Moving forward I want to shoot my jeans on different sizes models, of different ethnicities and ages. I want to show my clothing on all types of petite women, because that is what I believe the brand is for, every woman who is 5'5" and shorter.

I love photo shoots, it's one of my favorite jobs as a fashion designer. Its fun and creative - and the models are always up to trying new & innovative things. I love to work with models who are fun and energetic! Most of the time, I am running around like a crazy person, touching up makeup, pulling jeans straight, fixing hair, etc. But its still a lot if fun!

IJ: Shopping for jeans can be hell when you are short, can you share some tips that can help a shorter girl look taller in her jeans? What should she look for when shopping for jeans?

AI: I think first of all know your body. You have to try on all styles, so you can figure out what fits your body best, I like to recommend a darker denim, with a straighter silhouette. And if you can find a jean with a higher waist, it will definitely elongate your legs.

I also think you should try on as many brands and styles, and bring the shoes you will be wearing with the jeans. If it is a "going out with the girls" jeans then bring your stilettos, or if it is the jeans you are wearing while lounging at home, or at the coffee shop, then bring your comfortable ballet flats.

If you are not able to find jeans that are the perfect length for you, then I recommend washing your jeans first before going to hem them.

IJ: I really like your PANIO LOW RIDER: Bootcut, UK ZIPPED: Super Skinny style, and your UK ZIPPED CAPRI looks super cute with a pair of heels for Spring/Summer. What styles do you think a petite girl should be sure to check out from your collection?

AI: I try to design for different body types & personalities, which is why I usually do a trouser jean, and higher-waisted jean with a wide leg, a bootcut, a skinny, and now a super skinny. I hope everyone will be able to find a style which suits their body. But I think the most popular is usually the Trouser (Honolulu jean) and the Straight-Skinny (Kolohe). I personally wear the UK zipped all the time! It's a casual jean for me with flats and then I can wear them tucked into boots for Fall, or with some sexy stilettos for a night out. I think they are so fun & versatile.

Think twice before you post for the photographer's portfolio

A girl on Facebook recently told me she was going to shoot with a photographer and she would be “shooting for his portfolio.”

Well, I would think twice before posing for a photographer’s portfolio. Posing for The Photographer's Portfolio doesn't mean you will get anything of benefit for yourself and your own modeling goals. If you know the photos you need to excel as a model you will be better off, and the photos you need to start with are quite simple actually.

Focus on your face shots, your shots that show personality, and modeling products within your photos. Showing you can model something, a handbag, shoes, earrings, a cell phone, a cup of coffee, show your personality, and you will be picked up by a print agency sooner. Sometimes something that "sounds good" or "sounds too good to be true" is. And just shooting to shoot doesn't help your pursuits. Strive for more, aim for professionalism and focus on the photos YOU need. The Internet-age might seem like the easier way, but that route is full scams, so beware of TFP, and of course I would skip the Internet ads, websites, and model-sites, as well and amateurs. Get a comp card, focus on the photos you need, your experience will be better. and more productive.

Attended the Perry Ellis fashion show last night

A short model seeking a modeling agency tips

It all comes down to what YOU do for yourself, how hard you work, how you market your self. I had to strive to get my own tearsheets in magazines, experience and strive to work with professionals at the early days, months and years of my pursuits, it was true work. Not overnight. It was a journey. Building yourself as a model, your modeling portfolio, your compcard, and getting opportunities takes a lot of your own work. It comes down to what you want, and how you seek it out.

I think having some experience, and professional photos that show you have personaltiy, and your assets can help you get opportunities sooner. Especially if you can get some experience through your own self promotion.

When I was starting off modeling, I met a professional photographer through my own self promotion that shot for magazines, he ended up thinking of me for a job for a beauty editorial and it become my first modeling tearsheet, having that experience helped me get an agency to work with me. But that didn't mean life was sweet, it was still a lot of work, to perfect, improve my photos, and the self-hands-on-work that goes into working as a model really comes down to knowing YOURSELF, not having someone tell you what you could do, but YOU knowing.

Getting some experience modeling for a local magazine or with an aspiring brand can help you get opportunities to work with a print modeling agency, especially since a print modeling agency loves to see that you DO have experience.

However, the goal you have should not end with just "getting a modeling agency." The work is not done even when you do have an agency working with you, and as a shorter model often you end up freelancing with a few agencies all at once until you build your portfolio and can seek out exclusive representation later. I always think, no matter what, you have to have a focused mindset, be a positive person, confident and have a marketing mentality and be your own best agent as well. If you do not know what photos print modeling involves then research it, google it, learn about what print modeling is, study lifestyle ads, and this blog! :) There is not one thing that will you find opportunities and find your own success, because finding opportunities to model when your short involves a lot of your own work, many collective days, months and years usually.

Your own hustle makes stuff happen.

My Take on Online Modeling Networks and why skipping is it best

A girl on Facebook asked me " Do you think these model networking sites are a beneficial?

My reply:

As an author and advocate I use blogs, social media, my podcast radio show to promote my advocating about modeling, and share advice on modeling. However I DO NOT use social media to market myself AS a model. I strongly am against these sites.

I use comp cards, headshots, and my agents for professional modeling opportunities. In my modeling memoir Almost 5’4” I share A LOT about social media because the book starts in 2001, when social media was just starting to be a word people use. I plug and share my experiences using model-sites at the start and the ugly that came from it. I do mention model-sites that I had joined at the very start of my pursuits, and they are not sites where professionals are.

Through my mistakes with online social model sites, I learned a new language but the language I soon found was amateur. Word like TFP, "Trade For Pictures" or also known as “Time for Print” which involved amateur photographers working with aspiring models. What I found was often I was A LOT more ambitious than the photographers and the photographers were not even serious or professional or knew how to hold the freakin’ camera anyways.

I suggest models skip the internet-age all together, I know it might seem obvious, “download your photo, work as a model”…but the majority of the stuff on those sites are scams, rip offs, perverts and jerks, and a waste of time. Look at who runs those sites.

Most model-sites are run by a total amateurs who can’t even take a good photo.
Others are run by an online web company which has nothing to do with the modeling business and no one who set it up and launched the site is a legit person in the advertising, publishing, magazine, or branding world.

(it also inspires me to ask, why is it we don't hear about model-sites in the news, or a great model coming from web or Entertaniment weekly, NY Times, WSJ, Glamour, Marie Claire, Vogue, featuring one? Because they are amateur.)

(Also how come a magazine does not advertise on the site or have an association?, because these model-sites are for amateurs, and professionals do not want to associate with that.)

When it comes to modeling pursuits. If a girl “really wants to model” and I mean “really” as in work with brands, magazines, and really market herself well, it takes time, it takes more than the ego boost, and it takes really carefully crafting professional photos that well market you to the right agencies and right jobs, and show your assets very well.

Many girls forget that a “smile shot”, and the 4 photos all aspiring shorter model needs are actually very, very simply to get.

1. A headshot, smiling
2. A facial shot, beauty shot
3. A full body catalog style smiling showing personality
4. Showing you modeling a product, it could be a handbag, a shoe, a watch, jewelry, but showing you know how to “model something”.

Here are some samples:

If you have these shots plus maybe a couple extras, you can start preparing a comp card and put the first images in your portfolio. You will “really” modeling for something; you will “really” be able to call yourself a model when you skip the internet. Skip relying on comments, hits, clicks, and working with amateurs,w hich is what happens on those sites. It is a website for those who are “having fun” with the word model and photographer. VERY few on those sites really do work with quality brands, magazines and are professional.

Even if it means you only do 3 photo shoots a year for a legit brand or magazine, and even if it means mailing your comp card by postal mail to 50 agencies and only hearing back from one, it is better than wasting your time with foolish amateur photographers and Social Networking sites. The words “social networking website, does not go with the word “model”.. Not in the “REAL modeling industry.”

SKIP IT. Make a comp card, and buy a booklet at Barnes and Noble called “The CALL SHEET” it is in the magazine section, under film and TV, it has a list of modeling agencies, casting directors and talent agencies, strive for legit and you will get it.

The whole online "exposure" and "being seen" thing of the Internet age can be tricky, and I don't think it is the best thing for an aspiring model to strive for. If you have no experience as a model is might seen ideal to use the Internet to get ahead but online exposure is really not the best thing for an aspiring model to obsess over.

Unless it is a catalog shot for Macy's online website or ads, or a known national brand or magazine, a legit company, think twice.

Be careful, skeptical and questioning when considering modeling jobs for online exposure--marketing your self as a model when you are short is about actually getting off the internet, and get the tools real modeling agencies use. A comp card. A headshot. Professional photos. Always.

I believe in self promotion, and aspiring shorter models do need to put some in, before bigger opportunities can come sometimes. To "really" get opportunities to work with brands and magazines, you have to be professional about how you market yourself.

And before you get hyped about an online modeling job at this early stage of your pursuits, ask your self, “How will a modeling agency's eyes see this? How will this job affect the other goals I have? Is this job propelling me forward or just something for my ego, for fun?”

I think it is best to set realistic bigger goals, and then strive to do, accomplish the other little things that can get you there.

Unless the job you are accepting is going to lead you to your bigger goals, then I would skip it.

Modeling Agencies in Baltimore, Maryland AGENCY SPOTLIGHT

A girl on Youtube recently sent me a message saying " I currently live in Maryland, so i was wondering what agencies are the best in the CD or Maryland area that you think i should check out?"

My reply, Baltimore, Maryland AGENCY SPOTLIGHT:

These are print modeling agencies I would submit a comp card and/or headshot to.

Hence why it is important to have a comp card and headshot. To get an agency when you are not fashion model height, you must make it your self to submit by postal mail to print agencies. Print agencies DO NOT often make your comp cards for you, and often it can be a scam if they offer too, so beware of scams. While googling I found these agencies, I suggest creating commercial print modeling photos, styled for print modeling, hence looking at the agencies websites and getting an idea of the type of photos and models they work with you will notice a smile is a big thing to include in your compcard and within your marketing material...so make sure you perfect your photos, and target them to print modeling agencies, which is where a shorter girl can find opportunities. Modeling for a shorter girl is about your own self promotion and creating your own marketnig tools, unlike fashion modeling it is a place for a shorter girl to find opportunities but you do not get the hands on attention, when it comes to your marketing material. Like an actor makes a headshot a shorer print model needs to make her comp card.

I normally hear from aspiring female models, but recently I heard from an aspiring male model on Facebook, he wrote "I have read your blog and I am determined to get my compcard as soon as possible. As a young men, I was wondering do you know where I can look for a photographer that shoots compcards and what should I do after I get my compcards? Should I start sending them to agencies or wait and not send them till I create a portfolio?"

My reply may inspire you as well:

Your portfolio is something that grows with time and experience. So it is best not to just fill up the pages in your portfolio just for the sake of filling them up. You only want to show professional, quality photos in your portfolio that show off your assets.

However I would make sure to include your portfolio a nice headshot, smiling, then another looking more serious and also commercial print catalog style photos, then photos modeling a product, a watch, a cell phone, riding a bike, drinking a coffee, holding a basketball,-“acting” like you are using the product. I would study commercials and ads involving men. Also look in magazines such as GQ, Esquire, and even some women’s can inspire you because male print models are used often even Cosmo magazine. Consider this; for fashion modeling the men are not smiling. For Print modeling, they men do.

You should have both types of shots, depending on your height. Male fashion models are 6’ usually. However even if you are shorter you need a shot in a suit, formal, and a shot in casual wear, jeans. Remember is best NOT to show logos on the clothing you wear for your comp card. What if you go to a casting for Kenneth Cole, when your shirt screams Calvin Klein on your comp card. At this early stage, stay away from logos on your clothing in the shots, unless it is something you HAVE modeled for before.

You do not need swimwear or to show off your chest if you don’t want to, so don’t think you must. Here are some examples of what a male should focus on for commercial print modeling photos, from Macy’s.com, to give you the vibe of the personality to show in your own photos.

Commercial print modeling also welcomes men, males, of all ages and sizes, so target “commercial print modeling agencies” your comp card, mail by postal mail to print modeling agencies, talent agencies and casting directors. Modeling for a male print model is just as tough as it is for a female to market themselves and you have to be aggressive and positive about it. At the early stages, you might freelance with a few agencies, or try to book some of your own work through submitting a headshot and your comp card to casting directors for print and commercial work as well. Google, commercial print modeling + your city, talent agency + your city, casting directors + your city, then get some stamps and envelopes and mail your comp cards by postal mail. A LOT of them. It will be a process. This whole thing called making yourself a model, is one.

P.s: I use a PRATT portfolio you can find them in art supply stores. Usually it is an investment like $100 for a good one.

Hand Modeling has no height requirement

A teen on Facebook recently asked me about hand modeling. Well, hand models ARE all ages and modeling doesn't have a height requirement but...you do need professional photos of your hands.

Professional photos of your hands showing that you can use them to model products, from nail care, to holding a glass, cell phone, and jewelry, showing you CAN model and show expression with your hands and make the product look great! :)

Here are some tips on photos and submitting to agencies your photos, ----first you need the photos, then you need to make your self a compcard.....then you need to mail by postal mail the "parts divisions" of print modeling agencies your compcard. Not all agencies, but a decent amount have "parts" divisions. PARTS Models, CESD, Flaunt Models, are good places to start submitting your compcard. I'd also try to get some experience hand modeling as well....maybe modeling for aspiring jewelry designers, a student, --do some self promotion with aspiring accessories brands that might use a hand model, model some handbags, get some experience, which can help inspire an agency to work with you. Some experience, from self promotion, can prove you "know" how to hand model. Many agencies will not teach you this stuff. You will learn as you go, gain experience, and get better at it.

The L.e.i. Model Citizen contest, no height erquirement!

Growing up as a teen I wore L.e.i jeans all the time, they were a go-to-brand, I loved their message and the brand has a great fit and style-- and actually even as I get older I think the brand is still really great. It's Here! The first "Petite Model of the Week"

In celebration of my modeling memoir Almost 5'4" hitting England in one week!!! I wanted to announce the first Petite of the Week and also feature a petite model from the UK.

The first "Petite of the Week" is Katy, a girl with personality and a cute pixie haircut, from the UK. Through Facebook, she reached out about being a pint-size model. I did some research and found that there ARE commercial print modeling agencies in the UK, and here is the list I found. Katy also recently expressed that she booked a furniture and sofa advertisement in the UK!!

When I asked her about her experience on the job she said, "I was really excited to be working on the furniture commercial with other models. I really enjoyed working with a team of people, and being also in front of a video camera, which was a new experience for me. My height really wasn't important for this type of project; after all, it’s not only people who are 5'8 who use sofas!!! I believe it has more to do with personality and character to model 'lifestyle' products."

Congratulations to Katy for her efforts and being the first Petite of the Week! I am sure she will be someone we hear about again!

It’s true, I am one of the tiniest working models out there, but still I have worked with great brands and magazines. When I was told I was too short to model, I put what I did have to use, and here are 5 modeling jobs where height isn’t a big thing.

Hand Modeling, believe it or not you can have a life and be a hand model, and you can make hundreds or thousands a day doing it. Forget the gloves; just take care of your assets well. Hand modeling is perfect for shorter girl who have small hands that are dainty and thin fingers and nice nail color and nail beds. Size of the nail varies, and hand models are not measured by one standard rule. Hand models are all ethnicities and their hands do not all look alike. Many products and brands from cosmetics, to dish soap use hand models. I have hand modeled for Macy’s, Bon Appétit, Women’s World Magazine and many others. How to start: Get photos of your hands, with nail polish, and without, holding products and at ease. There are modeling agencies that specialize in parts modeling; these are the agencies to target your photos and modeling comp cards to.
Favorite on the job skincare item for hands: LUSH’s Lemony Flutter cuticle cream.

Shoe Modeling, getting your foot in the door as a model can involve your foot! My first modeling job was shoe modeling and most shoe models are not tall giraffes they are shorter. A size 6 or 7 shoe is typically liked in the shoe modeling world. Similar to hand modeling you need to target parts modeling agencies that represent shoe models. Having nice feet, toenails, and pretty ankles can mean over a thousand dollars a day or shooting a shoe ad campaign. I have shoe modeled for Brown Shoe, Marshalls, Easy Spirit, Victoria’s Secret, and many others. Again you do need photos that show your “feet diversity,” so you need photos of your feet in sandals, heels, boots, sneakers, without shoes, toes painted and not.

Favorite on the job skincare item for feet: OPI, AVOJUICE lotions.

Accessories Modeling, no one ever asks how tall the jewelry model is, and many times she is not that tall. Modeling earrings, rings, and necklaces is something a girl of any height can do. These days there are more handbag designers and accessories designers than ever. From scarves to belts, to gloves to hats, models in need, and they are not just skyscraper tall and are not just on the runway. Even though I am in my 20’s I am already moisturizing my neck and chest area and shoulders and back. Your skin is an asset and can get you a modeling job, or not, so if you want to model you can start by taking care of that skin. I use Alba, Nivea and St. Ives lotions for my whole body, and face favorites: Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, and Clinique’s Moisture Surge, and LUSH’s Ultralight moisturizer.

Hair modeling, all textures, styles, and colors of hair are welcome. From print campaigns to hair shows, hair modeling can give you a new look and also help to pay your rent. Also remember many hair models are modeling accessories such as curling irons, extensions, and hair dye. Next time you buy some shampoo at the drugstore check out the models on the hair color boxes,-that is the type of photo you need to focus on getting. A smile, fresh face, and hair alive and with personality.

To give your hair a boost try the V05 hot oil treatments, which I love, or John Frieda's Root Awakening conditioner.

Beauty Modeling, put your bright eyes, beautiful lips, and clear complexion to use in modeling for cosmetics. Focus on capturing these assets in your photos and make a modeling comp card. Also I suggest attending the IBS (International Beauty Show) and mingling with the brands and learning as much as you can about what is out there is the world of cosmetics. You will find there is a lot! Self promotion is key to working as a model when you are not tall, so grab your bootstraps and get your photos, comp card, and portfolio together because height is not everything in modeling if you know how to market what you do have.

Shorter Models and print modeling photo examples

I always say that petite models or shorter models, and print models need to show personality in photos. Interactive photos that show personality are something a print modeling agency wants to see. Here are some examples of what I am talking about. Shots that show you "doing something" with a natural expression of joy in your face. These shots will translate into showing an agency that you can look natural, show your personality, and sell a product. Other examples can be found in catalogs for commercial retail items on Target.com and Macys.com. Notice where the model is smiling, showing some personality.

getting yourself a modeling job and agency

Self promotion is key for an aspiring model. Especially if you are short. It is the small experience you get on your own that is credible that can lead to more opportunities and even an agency calling you back.

Here are some ideas for your self promotion and how you can get some legit modeling opportunities.

Having a compcard is important when marketing yourself to any of these options. So I suggest getting one made even if just with showing your headshot on it and one full body catalog styled shot. Better than being empty handed. Also it helps if your photos show you can model for the type of products you will be approaching, ex: if you want to model jewerly, show you can in your photo first. It takes confidence, personality, and a creative, upbeat, friendly approach, but you should give it a try. Getting some experience, can intrigue an agency. It wasn't until AFTER I had some experience, had been in a magazine, and gotten some tearsheets, that I got a modeling agency working with me. So grabbing your bootstrap and being a self promoter is helpful.

Get involved in your town locally. Get some local experience:
Attend a tradeshows for beauty or accessories and swim and fashion and market your self, attend a craftfair or fashion college fashion show and meet those who are ambitious and trying to grow their brand. Stop by a local boutique, hair salon. Ask if they need a model, if they use models, or who is the one who manages the marketing for their company. These days most brands have websites, and print material, even smaller growing brands have print ads in local magazines. Asking doesn't hurt, leave a compcard and your info, or take their card and submit by an email some jpegs with a note stating your interest in working with them on their next photo shoot for their company. Be friendly, compliment their brand and the things you like about it.

What a shorter girl can model:

Model for an aspiring jewelry designer - height has nothing to do with modeling jewelry.

Model for an aspiring handbag designer -should be able to no matter your height.

Model for a sunglasses company, or eye-glasses boutique.

Model hats or scarfs or gloves

Model shoes, size 6 is the same size for most shoe brands, most size 6 shoe models are shorter.

Hair model for print, and for in-store classes or events.

Nailcare and cosmetic brands that are aspiring, growing and might need a model.

Swimwear and lingerie brands that might be in need of a model. There is more to lingerie than Victoria's Secret, so do some research on other brands.

Sure, you might not be on a billboard, in a national commercial, or be in an ad campaign on your first try, but some small experience, some baby steps can lead to a lot more. You have to start somewhere, and self promotion is a big part of getting anywhere.

parts modeling is perfect for petite models

A girl on facebook recently sent me a message and asked: I'm interested in tips of leg (feet) and hand modeling my feet have been called barbie feet and ive gotten alot of compliments. I'm a runner so i've also gotten compliments on my calves. I also have decent hands i believe long fingers and great nail shape. surprisingly im 5'3" lol. I was just interested on information of the go abouts of getting started or anything a beginner should know.
